At this time of year we look at our colorways to decide what we will discontinue. We like to retire colorways because our dye lots are fairly large (16 skeins for sock yarns), and we usually dye multiple batches on different bases and put ups (i.e. sock yarn and shawl yarn). Maintaining inventory in too many colorways prevents us from bringing in new ideas. And sometimes we just want to change up how we dye the old one.
One example is our solar eclipse commemorative yarn we dyed this past spring. This was a good seller for us and we've done a few large rounds of it (we still have a little on worsted weight). While it is a colorway that we enjoy, we are out of stock of the sock and shawl versions and will not redye that version... but we are experimenting with a new version that has given us ideas about doing a yarn club that is space themed! We're trying to sort out the details, so stay tuned for more info.
We always encourage you to buy a colorway when it is available and you're able, but know it doesn't always work out, so we're happy to have you check with us if we're going to re-dye something you missed out on. We might just have plans!
We also love to hear your ideas, dyeing something for the solar eclipse was an idea that came from a customer. And, if we're ever out of stock of some colorway, let us know you want it and we can move it up the list.
Stay tuned for new releases and ideas for next year. And share your thoughts with us, we love to hear from you.
Happy crafting,
Brenda and Heather
